Fit Food: How Social Media Can Help Change Your Eating Habits

Fit-Food-FruitWhen I first saw people tweeting and instragraming their food I thought it was a bit strange. But as I started doing it myself I see many reasons why sharing your diet and fitness journey with the world through social media is actually a great idea!

In today’s busy, on-the-go world it’s a way to eat “with” others when we normally wouldn’t. Sit down, family meals are becoming rare and there are more people living alone now than ever before. Couple that with an abundance of cheap, quick and easy (and unhealthy) food and you get a recipe for weight gain and illness.

By slowing down and taking a picture of our food before we eat it allows your brain to process the fact that you are actually eating, which can help with satiation. And, if you are like me, you want your food pictures to look pretty, so you will spend an extra few moments arranging your plate and take shots from a couple of angles. This process really lets you notice the food you are putting in your body and that can help you eat less as well.

Looking at what others are eating can give you meal ideas! Most of the time other people will be more than happy to share the recipe for their creation. Fit minded foodies love company! Don’t be afraid to ask someone what that yummy looking dish is and be sure to let them know if you try it! can also think about it like a picture food diary, keeping you honest because you know everyone is going to be seeing your food! Try taking pictures of everything you eat for one day, even if you don’t tweet or share it (although I recommend you share!) and see how it affects your eating habits. Make sure you include everything, at least at first, until you get in the habit. You don’t have to be perfect and don’t worry about anyone “judging” you, just do it for yourself. As you find other people to follow and learn from and become more aware of your own food choices you will come to see social media as a very underutilized tool in your fit living arsenal! Have fun!

Happy Lifting!

I hadn’t ever though of this but in a way it makes you more competitive with your eating. You aren’t going to post a pic of something less than great for you so it also keeps you accountable as well. great stuff as always Dara!
