Any of these sound familiar? New Year’s resolutions are a January ritual that we’re all guilty of making and sadly not always keeping. Trust me, I’ve made a million resolutions which were ultimately doomed.

I finally stopped when I read about a super cool theory on life as explained by Tony Robbins; Constant and Never Ending Improvement, or shortened to the acronym CANI… I always like to add the ? to the end of CANI just to keep myself on my toes.

The Japanese have a single word for the notion of constant and never-ending improvement; Picture11Kaizen. I’ve read that it actually translates simply as “improvement” and really isn’t that we’re all looking to accomplish when we make our New Years resolutions? It’s just that; improvement in one way, shape or form.

What I tell myself every December 31 is that I will improve in a bigger picture kind of way. Whether it’s work harder in the gym, maintain a more consistently clean diet, be a kinder, more philanthropic person, and of course, a more patient mother. That last bit I get a boat load of assistance from two particular individuals. They help me by testing my ability to be more patient on a daily basis. The point is that on any given day, one of those, or even several will be my focus. I want simply to do each task better than ever before.

I know that I’m a bit of a conversation downer on New Years when the inevitable question arises about what everyone’s resolutions will be. I always say that I hope to do whatever I set my mind to a little better this year. I always receive polite smiles with eyes glazed over dinner-party_1291736cbefore the conversation moves quickly to the next person around the table. I guess people want something concrete to hold on, to hope for, to plan for and more tangible to struggle with. Personally, I have found that with my broader overall goal for improvement I am left in a position for Constant and Never Ending SUCCESS!
