How did you get started with fitness/bodybuilding?

I started lifting weights about 4 years ago when I was 19 years old. As a freshman in College at San Jose State I ran cross-country on a full scholarship. I didn’t even know what a gym was at that time. The summer of my freshman year, I came home and my friend gave me her brutally honest opinion of the way I looked. She told me I was so skinny and that I looked sick. She didn’t realize it at the time, but that comment changed my life. I didn’t want to look sick, I didn’t want to feel weak, so I got the in the gym. It was hard at first. I didn’t know what I was doing at all. I didn’t know what to eat or anything. Slowly but surely, though, I began to put on weight, and then lean muscle, and over time I added 60 pounds, I don’t even remember being little anymore, that feels like a previous life to me.

Where do you get your motivation from?

I get my motivation from several different places. First of all, the fact that I’m alive and breathing motivates me. People die everyday and it motivates me to keep pushing and reach my goals for those that can’t anymore. My mom motivates me. She raised me on her own, along with my two sisters. It’s not easy keeping food on the table and a roof over the heads of three kids when you’re a single mom. I saw how hard she worked when I was younger, and those experiences shaped me and give me that motivation to just crush the gym and my goals every single day!

What mistakes did you make when first starting out?

I definitely had no clue what to eat when I first started out. I would just eat EVERYTHING in sight, junk food from everywhere. Now, I did put on a lot of size because I went from eating 1-2 meals a day to about 6 and the increase in calories really helped me gain weight. Also, I didn’t get nearly enough sleep. Now everything is the opposite, my diet is on point, I sleep a ton, and my workouts are intense.

What does your typical diet look like?

I have 5-6 meals a day. I have 6-8 ounces of protein each meal, good carbs, some vegetables in the morning and at night and I also have a cheat meal every 4-5 days. I keep everything in moderation, I don’t overdue it on the cheat meals, and whenever I do have a cheat, I’m up doing cardio the next morning!

What’s your workout routine like?

I post a lot of my workouts on my Instagram. I hit the gym about 6 days a week. I’m constantly mixing it up and keeping my workouts new, if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you’re not going to get the most out of them.

Do you have any favorite athletes or models you look up to?

I respect every single athlete and person that commits to this fitness lifestyle, because it’s not easy. In fact, it’s extremely difficult to have the discipline and consistency everyday to reach your goals. So with that, everyone that continues to put in the work in the kitchen and in the gym, I salute you.

As far as pro athletes go, I’m a big fan of LeBron James. I just think he’s so bad-ass. He’s a man amongst boys on the basketball court. If you don’t get out of his way, he’s going to dunk on you. The dunk he threw down on Jason Terry a while back was ridiculous. I got out of my chair for that one. He’s just a freak athlete. A lot of people hate on him but he just continues to dominate his sport and that’s why I like him.

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short-term goals include staying shredded year round and ready for photo shoots. I want to put on at least another 10 – 15 pounds. I want to travel this year and tour with my Shredz team to promote our company and our team of athletes. Long term I just want to live a healthy and fun life. So many people take things for granted and I’m not one of them. I just want my family and friends to be healthy and happy, and I want to leave a positive impact on the world and inspire people. Who knows where I’ll be in 10 years, but I do know I will never give up on my goals.

What type of music do you like to listen to when working out?

I listen to pretty much everything, top 40, Eminem, TimeFlies, we also have a pretty bad-ass Shredz Workout Mix on the iTunes Podcast that gets released every month so check that out for sure.

Final Words?

I just want to say thank you to everyone who supports me on my journey. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from my close friends, my family, and everyone that follows me on social media. Special thank you to Arvin Lal my CEO, without his work ethic, vision and belief in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Also thanks to my friend Chad for always having my back and encouraging me to keep pushing through, and last but not least my mom. She’s always there for me and continues to help me when I need it.
